The largest of St Ives' five beaches, Porthmeor runs parallel to Harbour Beach, is sandy and is flanked by rugged headlands. The beach is both a Blue Flag winner and Marine Conservation Society Recommended, providing excellent conditions for swimming for adults and children alike. Seals and dolphins can be seen off the coast, and the Atlantic swells off the north-facing beach are much favoured by surfers and body boarders of all levels of experience. Lessons are also available locally. It is just a short step to the town centre and is overlooked by the iconic Tate St Ives gallery.
