About Sandsend Beach

Fossil hunters flock to the scenic Sandsend beach on Yorkshire’s heritage coast. With a tranquil atmosphere and plenty to see and do, this sand and shingle beach is a popular family attraction. A host of recreational activities at Sandsend include fishing, boating, pedalo hire and paddling.

A backdrop of striking cliffs provides fantastic scenery and shelter from the wind. Intrepid explorers can discover shells, fossils, pebbles and even Whitby Jet (a semi-precious organic gemstone formed over millions of years from the fossilised remains of the modern day Monkey Puzzle and similar trees) on the shoreline, while rock pools offer up an abundance of fascinating marine life.

When the tides are right, Sandsend Beach meets Whitby Sands and the relaxing stroll between the two is a popular way to spend an afternoon. For scenic cycling and cliff-top hikes, the Cleveland Way Trail is unrivalled.
