The sandy beaches in Studland Bay stretch for around 6.5 km (4 mi), and named Shell Beach, Knoll Beach, Middle Beach and South Beach. They are backed by sand dunes and heathland which form a National Nature Reserve, with important habitats for rare birds, plant life and butterflies. The beaches get very busy in summer, and zoning is in place for the water sports activities which take place here, including sea kayaking, canoeing, swimming, sailing, wind surfing and snorkelling. Fishing is also popular. A stretch to the north is reserved for naturists. The area is owned by the National Trust and is Marine Conservation Society Recommended.
