This long, sandy beach shelves gently into the water. It is located where the Torridge River meets the Taw Estuary and lies within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, recognising the importance of estuaries to nature conservation.
Calm waters are protected from swell by sandbanks in the estuary. Sand dunes provide sheltered secluded places for picnicking and sunbathing. It is possible to kayak down the rivers Taw and Torridge to the beach at Instow.
The beach can get very busy in summer: activities include wind surfing, kite surfing, sailing and fishing.
